Cork Flooring Installation Tips

By FAF Staff Writer, (242 words) Posted in Cork Flooring on September 15, 2010

Cork is a sustainable green flooring option that is resistant to scratches, mildew and mold and is naturally flame retardant. Another advantage is that it is highly sound and impact absorbent and an efficient thermal insulator. Many people choose to install cork flooring for its benefits.
The first step in installation is to open the boxes and expose the cork flooring for between 48 and 72 hours in the same room, to allow the planks to acclimate. Then prepare the sub–floor ensuring that it is totally clean, debris–free, level and perfectly dry. If necessary repair any cracks till the surface is absolutely smooth. Cork can be installed on most existing floors like wood, laminate or concrete. However the floor treatment will vary accordingly. A cork floor needs no underlayment other than a vapor barrier like a plastic sheet.
It is not too difficult to install a click-together floating cork floor but a few guidelines are worth remembering. While cork is suitable for most areas in the house, any unglued seams are bound to absorb moisture which will inevitably swell and warp the individual planks. So cork flooring in damp areas like bathrooms must be avoided.
Use the special tapping block supplied by the manufacturer to butt the planks together to make certain of an efficient and undamaged joint.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if a polyurethane finish coat is recommended after installation. This will serve as an extra protective layer which will increase the operating life of the cork floor.

Bonding Hardwood Floors

By FAF Staff Writer, (272 words) Posted in Hardwood Flooring on November 23, 2010

When bonding a hardwood floor, the first consideration must be the substrate floor and whether it is concrete, floorboards or asphalt and the condition it is in. Once the substrate has been prepared carefully either of the following adhesive systems can be utilized.
Full Surface Bonding
This method requires adhesive to be spread across the entire substrate floor using a notched trowel, forming a grooved pattern in the bond (rather like tile adhesive methods). This technique is suitable for all types of wood flooring. Work in small sections, as the wood needs to be put into place immediately. Recommended bonds SikaBond® T54, SikaBond® AT–84.
Bead Application
This system of bonding reduces the amount of adhesive required but can only be used with solid wood and engineered wood boards (not a suitable method for parquet). The adhesive is applied from a tube system using a glue gun in straight lines so that the beads of glue run at right angles to the direction you are laying the boards. This is a fast and effective method but again work in small sections, as the boards need to be in place within half an hour.
Remember that most adhesives have a minimum drying time ranging from 12 – 36 hours for the boards to bond securely. There are many products on the market to care for your wood flooring. Some care however must be taken to protect the wood, as some products are not suitable for wood floors and will damage, dull and coat the flooring. Be sure to ask refer to the manufacturer's recommended cleaning products.

Unlike many other types of flooring, hardwoods actually improve in both value and appearance as time goes by, and the older the floor becomes, the greater appeal it’s likely to have. Flooring By Climate

By FAF Staff Writer, (180 words) Posted in General Flooring Information on September 27, 2010

Climates vary from coast to coast and depending where you live, you might need to choose a floor that will stand up to your environment. Areas that are dusty, or get a lot of rain or snow are hard on floors, especially around the entrance. Rain and snow brings in moisture along with mud which is highly abrasive. An entrance area might be best served by a tiled floor. Ceramic or porcelain tile is extremely durable and is easy to clean. It’s also wise to place entrance mats both inside and outside the door as they will help reduce the amount of moisture and dirt that is brought into a home.

We often recommend removing shoes inside the home. You might be surprised how much faster floors will wear when shoes are worn in the house. Many people use house slippers and are sure to only wear them only inside the home. This will keep your floors protected from dirt and moisture.

For more information on flooring that is specific to climates, see our climate–friendly flooring section.

Best Flooring For Dogs

If you have a dog or dogs in your home, your flooring has probably been victim to scuffs, stains and even lingering odor. Any flooring you can think of has its pros and cons, so it’s a fine balancing act which flooring best suits your dog. Many dog owners go for a ceramic tile floor in the belief that it has a durable surface that is not absorbent. That is partly correct, but with ceramic tile comes grout and grout is very porous and susceptible to staining. It is recommended to seal the grout to help avoid staining and discoloration. The downside to ceramic is that the surface can be is slippery and hard on the dog’s joints, especially as they age.

Carpet is much softer and more comfortable under paws, but it’s not the ideal choice with a dog because carpet is liable to stain and hold odors. Dog hair is also hard to remove from carpet and unless carpet is vacuumed almost daily, dog hair can become almost embedded in carpet fibers.

Hardwood flooring can be damaged by a dog’s nails so look for a wood with a high Janka rating as well as one with a strong finish. It’s often the finish that gets scratched and damaged by a dog’s nails.

You can achieve the look of hardwood with laminate. A high quality laminate flooring is known for it’s durability and many people choose it when they have pets. One caution with laminate, it does not respond well to water or liquid so make sure spills are wiped up immediately. Once laminate is damaged, it can’t be repaired, it must be replaced.

Hardwood Floors and Noise

By FAF Staff Writer, (169 words) Posted in Hardwood Flooring on February 28, 2011

I was just visiting a friend back east and the first thing I noticed when I opened the door to their beautiful loft was the gorgeous hardwood flooring. What did I notice next? The unbelievable noise I made with my boots as I walked across the floor. It was so loud it almost sounded as though the sound was amplified with a microphone and sound system.

I come from a home that has wall to wall carpet so perhaps I am more sensitive to sounds transmission. However, the noise seemed quite disruptive. When you put leather boots against hardwood flooring, you get quite a racket. Keep in mind these were real hardwood floors, not laminate which tend to be even more noisy when walked upon. For this reason, it is recommended to use some sort of flooring sound barrier under your hardwood floors. Otherwise you might be thrilled with the look of your hardwood floors but not so much the noise that is produced when they are walked upon.

These is a great point and not one that people often think of when choosing flooring and I know noise is a big concern for some people - usually after the fact. I wonder if the noise you noticed might also have been because it was in a loft - high ceilings with unusual angles can amplify the sound. Making sure you're choosing the right flooring for the space is definitely important - not to mention your excellent observation that you need to choose the right kind of installation. Thanks for bringing this up.

Hardwood Flooring and Expansion Gaps

By FAF Staff Writer, (203 words) Posted in Hardwood Flooring on November 1, 2010
There are (10) comments permalink

When installing hardwood flooring, it is important to take into leave room for expansion gaps. Hardwood floors, like any other wood reacts to moisture. In humid conditions the wood absorbs moisture and expands. Conversely in dry weather the moisture is released and the wood tends to contract. If gaps are not left and the flooring butts up against the walls, when the flooring expands there is every possibility it will buckle. Expansion gaps are gaps left around the perimeter of the flooring and the baseboard of the walls to allow for this swelling and shrinkage. Recommended expansion gap width is between 3/8” and 3/4”, which can be covered using additional shoe molding or the original baseboard. As a thumb rule, the smaller the room the less the gap required.

The expansion of hardwood flooring will vary from one species to the next. Another contributing factor is the way the wood is cut and the amount of humidity in the atmosphere. In general, solid hardwood expands and contracts more than engineered wood flooring. Engineered hardwood is built in layers which helps to reduce movement. No matter if you are installing engineered hardwood floors or solid wood flooring, always remember to leave room for expansion gaps.

Bring Concrete Flooring to Life

By FAF Staff Writer, (173 words) Posted in Concrete Flooring on April 26, 2011

When you think of concrete, you probably think of dull and boring sidewalks. Today’s concrete flooring is transforming floors, patios, walkways and driveways into works of art.

Acid stained concrete is being used in both commercial and residential applications to create unique custom floors. Acid penetrates the concrete surface reacting chemically with the components to produce a finish much like polished marble. This is an affordable way to give a concrete floor the rich appearance of marble at a fraction of the cost. The base ingredient is hydrochloric acid which will call for the use of safety precautions and good ventilation when working. You can use this treatment to give you a number of transparent colors but only a limited range of shades. However you could still find shades from dark earth tones through to vibrant blue–greens. Solid color stains are your next option which acts both as a transparent colorant and a sealant. Solid color stains can produce a brighter hue than a concrete acid stain.

Engineered Wood vs Solid Wood Flooring

By FAF Staff Writer, (167 words) Posted in Hardwood Flooring on August 15, 2011
There are (22) comments permalink

If you are going to install hardwood flooring, many consider engineered wood a better choice than solid hardwood flooring, especially in conditions of varying temperature and humidity. Engineered wood is less susceptible to dimensional alteration, buckling and warping.

Engineered wood floors are made of a multi–ply plank construction that is designed to allow for expansion without affecting its structural stability. It comprises an inner core of softwood plywood or hardwood, or even high density fiberboard with a glued on top layer of veneer. The layers are bonded under heat and pressure to form a homogenous cross section. The stacking of layers is designed to prevent the inherent tendency of hardwood to expand, contract, cup or warp under diverse environmental conditions.

Engineered hardwood floors are still real wood flooring. Many confuse engineered wood with floors that are made to look like wood such as laminate or vinyl. This is not the case. Your engineered wood flooring will still look as beautiful as solid hardwood, in fact, it just might perform better in your home.

Unlike solid Hardwood Flooring, engineered flooring can be installed in any room that you choose, even a basement, because it can withstand moisture due to the layers of flooring that withstand buckling and rippling.

Solid wood is milled from a single 3/4" thick piece of hardwood. Because of its thickness, a solid hardwood floor can be sanded and refinished over several generations of use. Solid wood flooring expands and contracts with changes in your home's relative humidity. Engineered wood is produced with three to five layers of hardwood. Each layer is stacked in a cross-grain configuration and bonded together under heat and pressure. Engineered wood floors are a cost-effective way to attain the beauty of wood floors. They’re also quick to install. The final work isn't done on site, so you avoid any smell of finish and dust from sanding.

I have not tried engineered wood flooring, but it sounds like such a useful option. Hugely cost effective if your budget is limited. And the samples I have seen, are great. And installation is so easy these days with all the DIY options available. Add to that the fact that these floors can be installed in areas where hardwood won't perform well, and you have a winner.

The engineered wood is used quite a lot these days. The wood is cheaper and it also remains in working condition longer than solid wood. I am involved with moving services and i move quite a lot of furniture. So basically its always engineered wood. I did moving to Sydney last week and i move Solid wood and it was in the bad shape. I asked the owner and he said he is planning to change it with engineered wood.

On the subject of engineered Hardwood flooring. Buy a material with a 6 mm ware layer. This gives you a floor that will be as durable as a solid hardwood floor. Select a material with the bottom made up from a multi laminate plywood with ten laminates. This gives great stability and strength to your floor.

They both can be excellent products, but have to be well matched to their circumstances.

Engineered wood floors is not 'bullet proof' so to speak. It is appropriate for some installations, but solid hardwood flooring is still your best choice for a flooring product that will have longevity and permanence.

The previous poster has the right view of engineered vs. solid.

Solid finished on-site is absolutely appropriate for kitchens and almost any other properly prepared substrate.

Repair Hardwood Scratches with Exact Match Wood Touch Up

The last thing you want to see on your beautiful hardwood flooring is a scratch. Scratches can occur for various reasons and when they do, they are usually an eyesore. Thankfully there are products on the market that will bring your wood floor back to life. One product is called Exact Match Wood Touch Up. Below is a press release from the company.

Touch Up Products Introduces the “No Sanding Required” Scratch Repair For Wood Floors Kit.

PLANO, Ill., June 29, 2011 -- With the housing market in a tremendous downturn and people being cautious with their discretionary spending, an inexpensive way to repair a wood floor scratch is invaluable. When it comes to hardwood floors, traditional refinishing can cost $2.50–$4.00 per square foot and take days to finish. A typical open floor plan home can easily cost $5000 or more to refinish the hardwood floors. A more economical and timesaving option is the Exact Match Wood Floor Repair kit, which lets homeowners achieve professional results in about 10 minutes time.

The patented Exact Match system will permanently repair scratches or gouges on hardwood floors with no sanding required. The Exact Match “no sanding required” Wood Floor Repair kit includes everything needed to repair shallow or deep scratches on any color or type of wood floor.

The system works in four simple steps: Fill the scratch with the epoxy, select the color from a fan-deck of color cards that matches wood floor colors, wet the card with the supplied activator solution and apply the stain from the card to the epoxy that has filled the scratch. It’s quick, simple and costs a fraction of what a refinish job would cost without the mess and disturbance to your home and schedule.

Previously, only two repair options were available: refinish the entire floor, or replace the board with the scratch. According to company Vice President Don Burch, with the ability to focus only on permanently repairing the scratch while leaving the rest of the floor alone, Exact Match will revolutionize the process of repairing hardwood and wood laminate floors.

"What's unique about our system," said Burch, "is that no sanding is required and you only work on the flaw itself not the whole floor”. “This and the fact you have the ability to easily color match any color wood that you may encounter all in one kit makes it a real value for someone with a nick or scratch on their floor”.

The Exact Match system also works on a variety of surfaces, including wood, leather, aluminum, steel, fiberglass, laminate floors, etc. The color will adhere to almost anything.Repair kits are available from $39.95 to $69.95. The company is offering free shipping on orders of $39.95 or more, charging only a $2 handling fee. Silk Rugs The Ultimate in Flooring

For centuries, silk rugs and carpets have been manufactured in China, Iran and Turkey. Silk rugs are usually so costly that they are beyond the reach of the common man. Handmade silk carpets and rugs can take many months to make which largely accounts for their cost.

Silk has a high tensile strength, more that that of nylon. The rugs are woven in a range of line grades from 300 to 720. The tighter the weave, the more durable the carpet or rug.

Today, silk rugs can be mass produced in China, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and the Soviet Union. The quality and price is determined by knot count. Despite the expense, silk rugs and carpets are popular because of their flamboyant patterns, stunning, lustrous looks and uniqueness. They are ideal for homes that like to make an exotic style statement.

Silk rugs are delicate floor pieces which should not be used in high traffic areas. They are used more as accent carpets, floor decor and throw rugs. They are also popular as wall hangings. Silk rugs and carpets require careful maintenance. Cleaning should only be performed by a professional cleaner.

Flooring And Water Damage

By FAF Staff Writer, (370 words) Posted in General Flooring Information on January 5, 2011

There is something about Christmas that seem to bring on a lot of concern about water damaged floors and how to repair them. Christmas trees often remain in a home for about a month and of course if the tree is real, it requires water. Judging from the amount of phone calls and emails we received about how to repair flooring damaged by water, it's apparent that much of this water ends up on the floor and not in the tree stand where it belongs.

Depending on the size of a Christmas tree and its stand, it may require several cups of water per day. If you've ever watered a Christmas tree, you know it can be very difficult to get all the water in stand without spilling on to the floor. Well a little bit of water spilled on your flooring over a month can add up to a very unpleasant surprise when the tree is removed.

Laminate flooring and hardwood floors can be damaged or ruined to the point the the only option is to replace the water damaged floors. Laminate floors are susceptible to water damage and this is why steam cleaning laminate flooring is never recommended. Think of a piece of wet cardboard. When it drys, it never goes back to its original shape. The same will happen with laminate. Once it's damaged by water, it does not go back to its original form and replacement is the only option. Hardwood, depending on the level of damage is different. If the floor looks like it has a haze on it, it's most likely damage to the finish which can be sanded. If the hardwood is warped, it can also be sanded down but in order to keep the floor looking uniform, a larger area may need to be sanded.

Carpet, when exposed to water over time can result in mold. Of course water can easily soak through to the pad so you are left with two materials which can be effected by mold and mildew.

The best way to combat a water damaged floor is to prevent it. Make sure you have a layer of protection between any sort of plant or tree and your flooring. This can be a plastic lining or some sort of basin.

Anyway, thanks for sharing this article. I am able to share a bit of information I know why water can damage floor covering or carpets

Buying Flooring Online

By FAF Staff Writer, (403 words) Posted in General Flooring Information on January 17, 2011
There are (23) comments permalink

If you are in the market for new floors, you may be considering buying flooring online. There are advantages and disadvantages to this so we want to make sure you know what they are. When buying new floors, you want to make sure you consider all the factors.

Starting you search for flooring online is a great idea. It's an easy way to research products, brands, online retailers, brick and mortar retailers as well as flooring installers. The internet often allows for quick price comparison but price can often be misleading. Let's say one online flooring retailer advertises $3.49 per square foot and another advertises $3.99 per square foot. At first glance, the $3.49 is a much better deal with a savings of $.50 per square foot. That savings might actually be more expensive if the higher priced item includes shipping and the lower priced item does not include shipping. This is just one factor to consider when buying your floors online.

Depending on the type of flooring you are buying, you have to factor in installation costs. If you are going to install flooring yourself, surely that can be a big money saver however, it is not a time saver and some people wished they had hired a professional to install their floors as opposed to taking it on themselves. Keep in mind that many professional installers will not install flooring purchased online. We've had many homeowners contact us regarding this very issue. If something happens with the flooring and the product does not perform, one usually turns to the person who installed it. The installer will probably turn to the manufacturer and the homeowner is left with people playing the blame game while their flooring is left in limbo. One important thing to note; most flooring manufactures will only warranty their floors if they are sold through an authorized flooring retailer. Many online flooring sites are not authorized retailers for the products they carry. Imagine having an issue only to learn the place you purchased from is not authorized and you are now stuck. Suddenly your bargain price isn't such a bargain anymore.

The internet is probably the best place to start your flooring purchase but the best place to finish it might not be that online shopping cart. Do your research, read reviews, visit your local flooring store and ask lots of questions. Be sure to ask about flooring warranties, installation, removal of old flooring, floor care and maintenance and of course the total out the door cost.

image: blog cloud comment Maria posted on: February 1, 2011

The internet is a great way to check the large selection of floor coverings and compare pricing. Our website offers a calculator, instant quote and shipping charges. I suggest that you go until the last step during your purchase, sometimes the price of the product can look cheaper but at the end they add high shipping and handling fees.

Marco posted on: February 8, 2011

Absolutely true, while some of the internet flooring retailer look great on paper, make sure you get samples before, in addition ask about their return policy, if you need to pay return shipping on 15 boxes of laminate you may end up paying half the cost in shipping and getting only half your money back!

Buying online is fine as long as you are dealing with a reputable dealer. A critical key is to allow the flooring to fully acclimate in the installed environment for the manufacturer specified timeframe. Also, not always a good idea to go with the cheapest installer. Identical products are the same regardless of where bought and ow much paid. Installation is the critical variable.

Some of the most important features when choosing flooring for a kid’s room are safety, durability and the ability to clean it easily. Flooring that has some ‘give’ would be ideal to soften falls and prevent injury. But, the floor would still have to be durable enough to withstand spills, falling toys and wear and tear from dragged play toys.

Linoleum, rubber and vinyl are perfect choices because they are easy to clean and have a fair amount of giveLaminate flooring is another feasible option which is easy to maintain, but not as spill–resistantCork offers all the desired features and is green choice which is durable and comfortable underfootHardwood flooring can fall victim to children's toys, spills and rough–housingCarpet is soft underfoot, but can stain easily. Be sure to choose carpet that is stain resistantTile is great because it's almost damage proof, but it's a very hard so tumbles and falls on tile will result in bumps and bruises

If you love the flooring you currently have and don't want to replace it, look into foam mats that go over existing flooring. Many foam floors now come in bright colors with the ABC's and 123's so kids can play in a safe environment and also one that is educational.

Great post! Those design looks perfect. Great selection of flooring colors. Thank you for sharing. I'm looking forward to read more of your blogs.
Regarding the flooring my aunty installed dark chocolate black timber flooring and she swears by it she has two small children so she does need to sweep each day but she purchased a large swivel broom and it only takes her 5 minutes to sweep a large area, why she loves it is because it does not show any marks so she only needs to mop on a weekly basis on the other hand we have large concrete style tiles and they need mopping every second day.

I believe carpet is nice and warm for children, but not always the best flooring for them.
PVC flooring is not to hard for children, and they can play what they wont. Aqua-stop means a more patience mother. Better for everyone. Handy-cleaning.

Hello Henk! The carpet is really warmer for children and for everyone but keeps more cloths and dust.
PVC flooring keeps cleaner home and is easy to maintain but is colder and harder ( if the kid fall )

How To Clean Laminate Flooring

By FAF Staff Writer, (286 words) Posted in Laminate Flooring on October 12, 2010

Many people love laminate flooring for its durability, beauty and easy maintenance. However, one of the common questions we receive at FindAnyFloor.com is asking how to clean laminate flooring or what is the best way to clean laminate.

You can retain the pristine appearance of your laminate floor by sweeping or vacuuming it regularly to remove loose grit and dirt. A vacuum cleaner is the fastest way of going about this but a broom is a good alternative. Vacuum cleaners are the ideal choice because they are better able to pick up dirt and grit along the edges, in crevices or between planks. If you choose to mop your laminate floors, only use a mop that is slightly damp. Never wet mop a laminate floor as pooling water is likely to damage the floor. Be sure to dry with a clean, dry cloth immediately after mopping. A good way to protect a laminate floor is by placing doormats at entryways which will trap excess moisture and dirt, stopping it from getting into the home.

While laminate is known for its durability, it is not indestructible. It is recommended to mount furniture on floor protectors or glides to prevent accidental scratching or abrasion, and always ensure that heavy furniture is lifted while moving. Laminate flooring can scratch so take great care when moving any objects across the floor.

Many steam cleaning products are on the market that advertise they are safe for all types of floors. We never recommend steam cleaning laminate.  Also steel wool and scouring powders are a no-no. Avoid soap-based detergents, mop and shine products and never wax a laminate floor. With proper care and maintenance your laminate floor will provide your home years of beauty and warmth.

From my experience, using any water based product to clean laminate can cause damage the flooring. This is because the moisture is absorbed into the wood and can result in it to warp.

To remove any scuffs of marks, Quick Step sell a number of cleaning products such as Mix and Fix and Force.

Yates posted on: November 17, 2010

Laminate floor has the high durability and easy installation. It is also suitable for your room which has the high activity like the family room. It is also good for the kitchen or any room which has the direct contact with the water.

John Maclay posted on: December 1, 2010

I've always been an ‘anti-laminate’…until recently. There are so many advances in the tech that make it a great flooring choice.

Steer clear of bargain laminate! If it seems too good to be true--then it probably is. The differences between good and bad are mainly in the connection systems and wear layers. I've seen connections systems that seemed like they were dried cardboard and top layers that chip easily when jostled against other planks. Never a good situation.

My advice to all of my customers is: if you're going to be a DIY'er....then invest in good laminate. It will always make that margin of error fall in you favor.

Great post!

Your suggestion about not to use steam cleaner is appropriate. It harms the lamination. So, the best way of cleaning a laminate floor is cleaning it on a daily basis by vacuum cleaner or other soft cleaner.

Anti-Fatigue Mats

By FAF Staff Writer, (196 words) Posted in General Flooring Information on August 2, 2010

Anti–fatigue mats can be a blessing, especially when approximately 45 million Americans suffer from arthritis and 65 million from lower back pain. Many millions more suffer from various painful foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis and heel spur. Such sufferers, and people who stand for extended periods of time, like busy moms in the kitchen or teachers at school, obtain significant relief from anti–fatigue mats. Anti–fatigue mats offset the force and pressure exerted by a person’s body weight on joints like the knees and ankles, and lower back. Hard floors like stone, ceramic tiles and concrete are especially unforgiving and tend to exacerbate such pain. Anti–fatigue mats absorb the forces exerted when standing or walking and will help minimize any pain.

Anti–fatigue mats come in many materials such as gel, vinyl sponge and orthopedic rubber. They are available in many different styles and colors and can compliment almost any décor. These mats are very comfortable and are recommended for anyone, with or without joint pain. If you haven’t tried an anti–fatigue mat, you might want to. You may wonder how you ever lived without one. Below are examples of anti-fatigue kitchen mats in a wood finish, perfect for today's kitchen.

Carpet Tiles

If you are in the market for carpet, you might want to look into carpet tile. Carpet tiles, which are also called carpet squares and modular carpet tiles, provide the comfort of carpet with a bit of flexibility.

Imagine this – you have just finished installing carpet and someone spills the dreaded red wine or mustard at a party. Too embarrassed to mention their mishap, the spill turns into a carpet stain. Red wine stains and mustard stains are hard to remove from carpet. Even with professional cleaning it can be difficult to return carpet to its like new condition.

Modular carpet tiles allow you to literally switch out carpet in a flash. If a piece or portion of your carpet gets stained or damaged, you can replace only the damaged material. In the past, many people would end up replacing an entire room of carpeting because of one stain. Carpet tiles not only save money, but also save the environment. Imagine just how much carpet gets thrown away because of one stubborn stain or carpet burn. With carpet tiles, this won’t happen. Simply remove the damaged carpet and replace with a new carpet tile. Voila, just like new!

Here are two examples of how carpet tiles can be used. The first shows how easy it would be to replace a damaged carpet tile and the next shows how you can easily use carpet tiles to make your very own area rug and runner. Ask your local flooring retailer about carpet tiles. You might just fall in love with these fabulous carpet squares.

Versatility is just one of the qualities that make carpet tiles appealing. They provide quick, cost-effective solutions for daily wear and tear and you can easily customize your floorcovering design. One consideration, especially in commercial applications, the color of the new tile will most likely not be the same color as the older tiles surrounding it. On a grander scale, manufacturers of carpet tiles are greening up their product by using renewable and recyclable content, lowering VOC levels and offering return & recycle programs. I think carpet tiles are a win-win for designer and end-user.

Carpet tiles are a good option for the money conscious; they are invariably cheap and cost effective. You could fit out a whole house for the same price that it would cost to fill a bedroom with standard carpet. First home owners looking to build their first dwelling should see carpet tiles as a valuable opportunity to cut costs whilst maintaining modernity as well as style and fashion ability. Your fellow friends will be jealous they didn't take that route with their own built properties. Carpet tiles trigger my inventive instinct. It is a bolt driving power for me to think out of the box and create a piece everyone would resist to step on. But there are people also who rarely notice the design before they put their feet on it. But I never worry about it getting dirt or anything. Thanks for sharing this very informative fact regarding carpet installation.

Glass Flooring

Glass flooring has been used mostly in buildings and towers with observation decks. Clear, toughened glass provides a dramatic effect when installed high above the ground so visitors can see clear through to the earth below. Some of the best examples of dramatic glass floors are at The Grand Canyon Skywalk which is 4000 feet about the ground and The Sears Tower observatory deck at 1353 feet above the ground. Both attractions provide visitors with an amazing view through glass flooring.

More tradition types of glass flooring are found in glass tiles, which are available for commercial and residential use. They come in a variety of shapes, size and colors. While they look attractive and colorful, there do have some drawbacks. Glass tiles can be more expensive, they can scratch and are slippery when wet. However they are known to last a very long time and be impervious to water and dirt. A slip resistant sealant is recommended. While a glass floor is easy to maintain, it requires more than average maintenance because hand and foot prints show up easily. Since the tiles are delicate, glass tile installation is best left to an expert. Glass floors are ideal in bathrooms, kitchens and pool areas. A significant advantage to glass tile is that it's bacteria and allergen resistant.

Here is a great example of how a glass floor can greatly improve the viewing experience.

I love the idea of using glass floors in observation decks or other attractions, however I'm having difficulty imagining it in a residential application. Glass tile on backsplashes is easy for me to grasp, but I'm having a hard time picturing it on a floor. I would also assume they are very slippery and shouldn't be used in areas that are often wet. Do you have any pictures of a glass floor in a house?
