Slate tiles are natural stone tiles which can be used almost anywhere in the house including kitchens and bathrooms and even outdoors on patios and pool decks. Slate tiles are naturally rough and uneven in texture making them a slip resistant surface. Slate is durable and with its recurring varying patterns and colors, it also offers a decorative flair. Slate tile is often used in both residential and commercial flooring applications.

Slate tiles are available in a variety of colors like gray, green, orange, red and black but the most popular choice is gray. Gray is a neutral color which tends to suppress dirt and stains and usually requires less cleaning. Scuffs and scratches do not show up as easily as they would with some other stone floors making slate an ideal choice for homes with heavy traffic or large pets.

Slate is quarried from large deposits, especially old water bodies, where silt and other mineral deposits have collected and have been compacted for several thousand years under great pressure. Traces of quartz, mica, chlorate and other minerals are found in slate which makes this stone so durable and colorful.

In Italian, terracotta means ‘baked earth’, which is unglazed, clay–based ceramic. The description is also applied to porous, red–colored glazed ceramics. Traditionally, terracotta has been used for centuries for a variety of uses such as pottery and sculpture, roof shingles and bricks. Another significant application is its use in floor tiles. Terracotta tiles, which look better as they age, add warmth and beauty to any room which makes them popular with homeowners. Unsealed, they are an ideal choice for outdoor use like on patios and driveways since they are able to resist the elements.

Terracotta floor tiles vary in color from light honey to deep brown or red. The tiles are very porous and need to be sealed at time of installation, a process best left to a professional. Once sealed, terracotta is easy to maintain and is commonly used as flooring in bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms. Terracotta flooring is very durable though not as hard as other kinds like natural stone or ceramic tiles. However, it is far more affordable and not as cold underfoot.

Terracotta flooring tiles are inexpensive, low maintenance, and bacteria and allergen resistant. Terracotta tile installation should be left to a professional as it can be difficult to install.

I totally agree about that a professional should install terracotta tile. I've seen a few amateur installations that the home owner will have to replace far too soon because of the difficulty of this job.

I wouldn't consider terracotta as an inexpensive tile. The better names of it can cost around $4-8 a SFT at a local retailer.

The Making Of Ceramic Tile

Ceramic Tiles for walls and flooring have been in use since the Renaissance. They are durable and resistant to fire, frost, stains and moisture. Surprisingly a ceramic tile is just processed clay which has been formed, glazed and baked. The basic manufacturing process remains unchanged over the centuries but has been refined and advanced for mass production of a superior product.

Today ceramic tiles are manufactured by a process known as dry pressing or dust pressing. A base of clay is mixed with sand, quartz, feldspar and water and ground into a ball which is known as a ‘body slip’, which forms the essence of the tile without its glazed topping. The body slip which contains 30% water is placed in a dryer where the water content is reduced to 6% which reduces it to powder or dust. The powder is put into molds and subjected to immense pressure in a press to form the body of the tiles. The tiles are then glazed and colored with pigments, using a variety of surface finishes for a matte or high-gloss appearance. At this stage the tile is known as a ‘green tile’. The tiles are then placed in a kiln where they are fired at temperatures going up to 2,500°F. The process of firing is what gives the tile its strength.

Monocottura firing or ‘fired once’ is what gives the tile the strength to be used as flooring. For a variety of colors and patterns the tile will have to be Bicottura fired, that is, fired twice or more often as required. The tile is now ready for finishing and packing.

While opinions will differ, here are some facts on wool carpet. Wool the perfect example of a green flooring product. It is renewable, highly durable, biodegradable and with low toxic content. At the other end of the scale, petrochemical based carpets contain as many as 120 chemicals and can adversely affect indoor air quality. Natural wool is extremely durable having a lifespan of between 25 to 50 years, far longer than its synthetic equivalent. It does not off–gas, so has no affect on indoor air quality. Wool carpet is soft, odor free and air purifying. In addition, wool absorbs noxious gases and contaminants, is a good insulator, is sound resistant and releases soil easily. Wool is non–toxic, non–allergenic and resists bacterial growth. Wool is able to regulate humidity because it can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water vapor due to the unique composition of its fibers. It is also able to absorb contaminants like sulfur dioxide and formaldehyde. The icing on the cake is that natural wool is fire resistant.

A wool carpet or rug will age gracefully and over time will develop a rich patina which will enhance its appearance. Regardless of age, wool rugs and carpets remain vibrant and supple. Wool truly has a distinctive class of its own.

If you have a wool rug you should have in my that cleaning this kind of carpets is different from the ordinary one. My advice is to look for advices before cleaning it. This will save you a lot of troubles.

Many readers write in asking for recommendations on the best garage flooring. Because each need is different, the best flooring will likely differ between each user. Here are a few popular garage flooring options.

Epoxy coating an existing floor is a cost–effective option that is durable and will offer a life of up to 20 years. Epoxy coating with a urethane topcoat is easy to clean and maintain. Its light reflective surface brightens any garage. However, for effective service, the existing floor must be properly prepared to ensure the epoxy coating adheres correctly. Installation time can be substantially longer because the existing floor must dry fully after being prepared. The flooring too will have to dry after application of each coat of epoxy. All told, you might allow for 2–3 days for installation because of drying time.

Roll Out Mats are another option which can be more expensive than epoxy coating. These are easy to trim to size and install. Mats can be joined together by fusing the seams to form a waterproof joint. Roll Out Mats are durable, impervious to road salts and vehicle fluids and slip–resistant. Floor preparation is confined to sweeping out dust and debris before installation requiring negligible installation time.

Garage Tiles are one of the best option provided the budget permits. Garage tile flooring can be expensive. Interlocking PVC tiles that are virtually indestructible, offer water–tight seams and are easily installed. Typical installation time is 3–4 hours for 600 square feet. A reliable manufacturer will offer a warranty of up to 30 years. Garage tiles area available in a range of colors, styles and designs. A major advantage is that an individual tile can be easily replaced at any time should the need arise. The major disadvantage is in the high initial cost. Installation does not require much time or expertise.
