When installing hardwood flooring, it is important to take into leave room for expansion gaps. Hardwood floors, like any other wood reacts to moisture. In humid conditions the wood absorbs moisture and expands. Conversely in dry weather the moisture is released and the wood tends to contract. If gaps are not left and the flooring butts up against the walls, when the flooring expands there is every possibility it will buckle. Expansion gaps are gaps left around the perimeter of the flooring and the baseboard of the walls to allow for this swelling and shrinkage. Recommended expansion gap width is between 3/8” and 3/4”, which can be covered using additional shoe molding or the original baseboard. As a thumb rule, the smaller the room the less the gap required.

The expansion of hardwood flooring will vary from one species to the next. Another contributing factor is the way the wood is cut and the amount of humidity in the atmosphere. In general, solid hardwood expands and contracts more than engineered wood flooring. Engineered hardwood is built in layers which helps to reduce movement. No matter if you are installing engineered hardwood floors or solid wood flooring, always remember to leave room for expansion gaps.

To prevent Hardwood Flooring from gapping or the opposite cupping you need to do a few things.
#1 Know what the humidity levels are in the home before you deliver the wood flooring and what the recommended levels should be. #2 Ensure that the humidity levels are kept within those parameters to prevent these problems once the floors are installed.

When you think of concrete, you probably think of dull and boring sidewalks. Today’s concrete flooring is transforming floors, patios, walkways and driveways into works of art.

Acid stained concrete is being used in both commercial and residential applications to create unique custom floors. Acid penetrates the concrete surface reacting chemically with the components to produce a finish much like polished marble. This is an affordable way to give a concrete floor the rich appearance of marble at a fraction of the cost. The base ingredient is hydrochloric acid which will call for the use of safety precautions and good ventilation when working. You can use this treatment to give you a number of transparent colors but only a limited range of shades. However you could still find shades from dark earth tones through to vibrant blue–greens. Solid color stains are your next option which acts both as a transparent colorant and a sealant. Solid color stains can produce a brighter hue than a concrete acid stain.

If you are going to install hardwood flooring, many consider engineered wood a better choice than solid hardwood flooring, especially in conditions of varying temperature and humidity. Engineered wood is less susceptible to dimensional alteration, buckling and warping.

Engineered wood floors are made of a multi–ply plank construction that is designed to allow for expansion without affecting its structural stability. It comprises an inner core of softwood plywood or hardwood, or even high density fiberboard with a glued on top layer of veneer. The layers are bonded under heat and pressure to form a homogenous cross section. The stacking of layers is designed to prevent the inherent tendency of hardwood to expand, contract, cup or warp under diverse environmental conditions.

Engineered hardwood floors are still real wood flooring. Many confuse engineered wood with floors that are made to look like wood such as laminate or vinyl. This is not the case. Your engineered wood flooring will still look as beautiful as solid hardwood, in fact, it just might perform better in your home.

I have not tried engineered wood flooring, but it sounds like such a useful option. Hugely cost effective if your budget is limited. And the samples I have seen, are great. And installation is so easy these days with all the DIY options available. Add to that the fact that these floors can be installed in areas where hardwood won't perform well, and you have a winner.

I have pergo (laminate) flooring and do not like it at all. You cannot leave any water on it or it will expand and stay that way, ruined. If you leave a window open, you must be sure it is not going to rain that day. I would much rather prefer hardwood layered with polyurethane.

Engineered wood floors is not 'bullet proof' so to speak. It is appropriate for some installations, but solid hardwood flooring is still your best choice for a flooring product that will have longevity and permanence.

The previous poster has the right view of engineered vs. solid.

Solid finished on-site is absolutely appropriate for kitchens and almost any other properly prepared substrate.

Besides many advantages, silk rugs do have few disadvantages:
They do not stand up to heavy foot traffic, are damn expensive to clean and reacts poorly to water.

Flooring And Water Damage

There is something about Christmas that seem to bring on a lot of concern about water damaged floors and how to repair them. Christmas trees often remain in a home for about a month and of course if the tree is real, it requires water. Judging from the amount of phone calls and emails we received about how to repair flooring damaged by water, it's apparent that much of this water ends up on the floor and not in the tree stand where it belongs.

Depending on the size of a Christmas tree and its stand, it may require several cups of water per day. If you've ever watered a Christmas tree, you know it can be very difficult to get all the water in stand without spilling on to the floor. Well a little bit of water spilled on your flooring over a month can add up to a very unpleasant surprise when the tree is removed.

Laminate flooring and hardwood floors can be damaged or ruined to the point the the only option is to replace the water damaged floors. Laminate floors are susceptible to water damage and this is why steam cleaning laminate flooring is never recommended. Think of a piece of wet cardboard. When it drys, it never goes back to its original shape. The same will happen with laminate. Once it's damaged by water, it does not go back to its original form and replacement is the only option. Hardwood, depending on the level of damage is different. If the floor looks like it has a haze on it, it's most likely damage to the finish which can be sanded. If the hardwood is warped, it can also be sanded down but in order to keep the floor looking uniform, a larger area may need to be sanded.

Carpet, when exposed to water over time can result in mold. Of course water can easily soak through to the pad so you are left with two materials which can be effected by mold and mildew.

The best way to combat a water damaged floor is to prevent it. Make sure you have a layer of protection between any sort of plant or tree and your flooring. This can be a plastic lining or some sort of basin.

moisture or water makes the flooring imperfect. There's an explanation regarding that. It's the way how the flooring or carpets are installed. Combined with Physics, there are things to consider like the floor's tension and the absorption capacity.

Anyway, thanks for sharing this article. I am able to share a bit of information I know why water can damage floor covering or carpets

You are exactly right.

We had hardwood floors covered by carpet. We had out house tested and found that we had a slight mold problem.

As part of our overall efforts, we had the carpets pulled and the hardwood floors re-finished.

Yes, we still have moisture in the house. But now that the carpet is gone and the hardwood flooring can breathe, things are much better.
